					<description>Oh by the way,

You who were in accelerated classes:

Did you cover the entire 60's Decade in History class?

<description>Excellent point Jeff, civil rights is definitely more national in scope and the South, particularly Mississippi, gets to wear the generational bruises for it.

Shortly after I wrote this post a flurry of stories about gang violence; Brown on Black; Black on White crimes surfaced here.

I think my point is that I do recognize this goes way past the borders of the Southern states. It'd be good for every State to own up to the history of that period though. I wonder if History class in CA delves into the Watts riots of the 60's. Or the Rodney King beating and subsequent uprising of the 90's

At the very least they could use the movie &quot;Grand Canyon&quot; in class.

Oh wait that was rated R.

<description>I wouldn't be too hard on MS; I've known people from all over whose history barely went that far. And these were the wonderful conservatives who prayed in school and did everything right, right? Now them damned liberals had to bring all that hippie dippie civil rights junk in and take out our prayer! And teach that the world is older than 6000 years! Damned pinko commies.</description>

<description>Having grown up in MS, I understand this story all too well. Long story, but I was reading the opinion page of the Clarion Ledger (Jackson, MS newspaper) earlier this week and came across this:

http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007701150312

I was pretty impressed until I realized it was by a syndicated columnist. Regardless, very interesting and timely,
