The reason Crim is always so volatile is because with great skill comes great ego. I don't want to say Mastelotto is less than Bruford, but he doesn't have half the ego. A tenth? Even Levin has an ego, I bet. We just don't see it. It's why Crim is one of very few bands (like Kansas, for an odd comparison) that's consistent with whatever it produces. It may be weird, but it's consistently weird. No surprises, but plenty of thrills. Kansas suffers from Steve Walsh's pop fetish. If anything, Crimson suffers from Fripp's refusal to change.
